Goal Range vs. Peace Range

Jul 08, 2026

Many people approach Maintenance with a specific goal weight range in mind. But what happens when the number you thought you should maintain doesn’t line up with where your body actually feels most at peace?

In this vlog, I explore the difference between a goal range and a peace range.

My Own Weight Range Isn’t Fixed

I’ve maintained a 60-pound weight loss for more than 23 years, and during that time, my weight hasn’t stayed fixed at a single number. Like most people in Maintenance, I’ve lived within a range. That range has shifted at different points in my life due to fitness goals, pregnancy, hormones, and periods where I wasn’t fully keeping my Bright Lines. Looking back, I’ve maintained within roughly a 20-pound span over those two decades, even though my day-to-day Maintenance range is much narrower.

That experience highlights an important distinction. A goal range is often determined in advance based on a formula, a target weight, or an idea of where we think we should end up. A peace range, by contrast, is discovered through experience. It’s the range where your eating feels sustainable, your body feels settled, and you can live your life without constantly battling your weight.

The Difference Between Reaching a Weight-Loss Goal and Finding Peace

In Bright Line Eating, we teach that Maintenance is never about a single number. Weight naturally fluctuates over time, so the goal is typically a range of about five to ten pounds.

For some people, that range works beautifully. For others, it may need to evolve.

A peace range may be higher than the goal range you originally chose. You may discover that maintaining a slightly higher weight allows you to feel satisfied with your food, trust your body, and live with greater ease and sustainability. Reaching that realization often requires letting go of a diet mentality and embracing Maintenance as a way of life rather than a destination.

When Peace Means Letting Go of the Number on the Scale

One of the hardest parts of long-term Maintenance can be accepting that your body may have wisdom of its own.

If months or years of data suggest that your body consistently settles at a weight above your original goal range, continuing to fight for a lower number may come at the cost of peace. Sometimes the deeper work is learning to trust what your body is telling you.

The goal isn’t simply to weigh less. It’s to create a life that feels sustainable, fulfilling, and free from constant struggle.

Sometimes the Peace Range is Lower

For some people, the opposite is true. They discover that they naturally settle at a weight below the goal range they originally selected.

As long as health markers remain strong and the body is functioning well, a lower peace range may be where they feel most comfortable, energetic, and at home in their body. In these cases, the work is often giving themselves permission to adjust their expectations and trust their lived experience.

Finding Peace in Maintenance

Ultimately, weight-loss Maintenance isn’t about managing a specific weight. It’s about finding alignment between what you want to weigh, what your body naturally wants to weigh, and the life you want to lead.

As your body changes over the years, your range may change, too. The question isn’t only whether you’re within your range, but whether you have peace. When we focus on sustainability, well-being, and long-term freedom, Maintenance becomes less about controlling a number and more about creating a life that works.

If you’re in Maintenance, consider this question: Is the range you’re pursuing giving you peace, or is it time to redefine what success looks like?
