During the launch of my new book, Maintain, we offered a workshop called “Aligned.” It sold out almost immediately, was hugely popular, and afterward, people wrote to tell us how deeply it resonated with them.
When Bright Line Eating Starts to Feel Like “You”
Let me give you a word you may never have heard (I hadn’t until recently): egosyntonic. It means doing something that is aligned with your identity and sense of self. Sounds great, right? To be honest, it’s not always a good thing. For example, it’s hypothesized that anorexia is so hard to treat because it can be egosyntonic, as opposed to bulimia, which is less often aligned with a person’s identity.
But it can be positive, though. An Olympic athlete, for example, may find their hard physical training regimen egosyntonic, or aligned with the kind of person they want to be.
In Bright Line Eating, it can take some time to make the deep identity changes needed for the program to be in line with who you are. The tweaks people make so the program fits their life can make it feel more egosyntonic; more attuned to their personality and life.
Why Personalization Matters
That brings me to the second category of comments we received after the workshop. People told us that they loved the workshop because it made them feel more welcome at the table. It helped them stop feeling guilty for making the changes they needed.
And that’s fine. There’s no such thing as an off-the-shelf Bright Line Eating program. Just to get your first meal on the table, for example, you need to make multiple decisions: Will you eat animal or plant protein? Will you use salt and pepper, or condiments? Will recipes play a role? Do you keep the vegetables split as it is in the standard plan, or shift the ounces to 10 at lunch and 10 at dinner? Do you use the standard or enhanced protein plan?
Healing Your Relationship With Success
It goes on. Everyone needs to personalize and modify the plan. It’s a process of aligning:
- The program you’re willing to follow
- The program your brain actually needs
- The identity you’re building
People often come to us very scarred from decades of trying to eat one way or another, and being set up to fail. That takes a toll. Over time, that can impact a person’s identity. When they get here, their relationship with food may not be egosyntonic, and succeeding with Bright Line Eating takes them by surprise.
As they make modifications and tweaks, their brain develops peace with the idea of success, and they slowly become aligned.
Finding Your Bright Blueprint
Because there’s so much depth to this idea, I wanted to spend more time exploring it with you. So we are offering a free webinar called “Your Bright Blueprint: Define, Design, and Live Your Weight-Loss Success.”
The webinar is for anyone who wants to explore the idea of getting aligned. There’s a registration form below that you can click on to register.
I encourage you to think about the notion of being aligned with your Bright Line Eating program. It’s not a “should” thing. It’s a question of what serves you and gives you peace, and what works for your brain and lifestyle.
Alignment isn’t about forcing yourself into someone else’s version of Bright Line Eating. It’s about discovering the version that truly supports your brain, your life, and your peace.
