Dopamine isn’t doing just one job in the brain. In The Molecule of More, the authors distinguish between “desire dopamine” and “control dopamine,” and that distinction can help explain both addiction and recovery.
The Two (Very Different!) Dopamine Circuits
Desire dopamine fires in the mesolimbic reward pathway, which connects the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the brain with the nucleus accumbens. This is sometimes called the addiction or reward pathway. People sometimes call it the pleasure pathway, but it isn’t really about pleasure. It’s about wanting, craving, anticipation, and the drive to pursue something.
This system evolved to motivate us toward things like food and sex, but it can be hijacked by other highly rewarding stimuli—everything from cigarettes and drugs to screens, games, praise, and highly processed foods.
Control dopamine operates in a different circuit: the mesocortical pathway, which runs from the VTA to the prefrontal cortex. This circuitry supports planning, willpower, execution, weighing consequences, and following through on your intentions.
What Addiction Does to the Balance
As addiction progresses, these two systems can become increasingly unbalanced. The desire circuit gets stronger, while the control circuit weakens. Specifically, the connections TO the control circuit get weaker, which means the prefrontal cortex loses the ability to rein in addictive urges.
That helps explain something that can otherwise seem incomprehensible: why someone might continue using a substance even when they know the consequences could be devastating. Someone might still use drugs, for example, even if they knew it would cost them custody of their children. When a cue signals that a reward is available, incentive salience can put such a powerful spotlight on that reward that everything else, including the consequences the person deeply cares about, fades into the background.
Something similar can happen with food. You may genuinely intend to stay Bright, avoid sugar and flour, and keep the promises you’ve made to yourself. But then a certain time of day arrives, the food is available, and the desire circuitry takes over.
Repeated floods of dopamine also cause dopamine receptors to become less numerous and less responsive. That contributes to tolerance: needing more of the substance or behavior to get the same effect. Meanwhile, the control circuitry may no longer be strong enough to rein in the increasingly powerful desire system.
Why Tracking a Goal Can Help Heal the Brain
One surprisingly simple way to start restoring balance is to set a goal and track it. In Bright Line Eating, we use tools like nightly checklist sheets, tracking calendars, and 30-day challenges. These may seem like small practices, but they engage both dopamine systems.
Suppose you decide to stay Bright for 30 days and color in a square on a calendar every successful day. Making the plan and following through engages the mesocortical control circuit and strengthens the connection between the VTA and the prefrontal cortex.
When you complete the day and mark it off, you get a small reward response from the desire dopamine system—the same satisfying boost you might feel when you cross something off a to-do list.
Significantly, that’s a healthy amount of dopamine rather than the overwhelming flood produced by an addictive substance or highly rewarding food. Over time, these small, appropriate rewards can help regulate the desire circuitry while strengthening the control circuitry.
Small Habits That Strengthen Recovery
