This week, I want to talk about the impact of obesity, our obesogenic food environment, our addiction to ultra-processed foods, and GLP-1 weight loss drugs on health care costs and our rising insurance premiums.
You’ve probably noticed the increase in health insurance premiums. At Bright Line Eating, we pay 100 percent of the health care costs of our employees. When we started 11 years ago, those costs were already high, but since then they have grown. A lot.
Eleven years ago, the universe told me to write Bright Line Eating. At that time, I was aware that addiction was driving a lot of our obesity, and that Bright Lines—clear boundaries—against sugar, flour, and snacking could be effectively used by those who wanted to lose weight and experience food freedom.
I knew there was a lack of understanding about this. I realized I needed to write this book to help eliminate the darkness around this topic. The need in the world is what pulled this book out of me.
The Impact of Weight-Loss Medications on Insurance Costs
It feels to me like something similar is happening now. Over the last few years, I’ve been watching people flock to GLP-1 medications. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I am pro-choice about the medication. It’s a tool that can help solve the problem for some people, but it’s not the solution itself.
85% of people stop taking the medications within two years and most of that is because their weight loss plateaus. This creates another revolving door in the endless cycle of dieting. That’s not helpful. The drugs need to be paired with a long-term, sustainable program.
And now I see companies hemorrhaging cash to pay for these medications. Most big companies self-insure; they cover the medical expenses of their employees. They’re drowning in the costs of GLP-1 drugs. They’re also still paying for diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and so many other chronic obesity-related diseases.
Lower Insurance Costs… With Better Health Benefits
These are all things Bright Line Eating can help with, and I feel like we are being pulled into this space. I feel like we’re being called to tell companies we’ve got a cheaper, non-pharmacological, behavioral solution that produces the same results as weight loss drugs, while also helping people to eat in such a way that their costs related to diabetes and heart disease go down.
We need to step up and become the solution, because no one else will. We have to get involved.
So we’re going to start to explore the business-to-business space. And maybe you can help. Are you in HR, finance, or benefits in a company of over 500 people? Are you married to someone who is? Do you know someone who is a decision-maker at one of these companies? If so, we’d love to hear from you. Maybe we could work with you to do a program with Bright Line Eating and your company.
Reap the Health Benefits for the Employees of your Company
Maybe it’s something simple like letting employees know they can use their FSA, HSA, or HRA dollars to cover Bright Line Eating. Maybe your company would help pay for employees to participate in Boot Camp.
Below this vlog, we’ve got a link to a very simple Google form. We ask you to fill it out if you are associated with a large company. Someone from the Bright Line team will get in touch with you within 72 hours. We have a brochure you can give to people at your company to explain who we are, and we’ll set up a meeting to take it from there.
We’re looking more and more to step into this space, because it’s needed. And if we don’t do it, I don’t think anyone else will. This is a calling, and I think it’s more and more of where our future lies.
