I learned about Bright Line Eating from a friend after I shared my food struggles with her. It felt too scary. It felt too big. So I kept to my own devices for the next year.
I continued, as I had done for years, to try all sorts of different diets, programs, and workouts. Sometimes with small success—but the weight always came back on.
I watched a friend have huge success with Intuitive Eating. I bought the book. I read the book. I followed the plan. Intuitive Eating subscribes to the belief that food addiction does not exist. You do not restrict any food and then the cravings go away. I leaned in. I did not restrict food. But guess what—they were wrong. Food addiction is REAL! I gained 30 pounds in 45 days!!! Allowing myself to eat anything I wanted whenever I was hungry lit my addiction on fire. And I knew with every fiber of my being I was a food addict.
After those 45 days, I was more depressed and self-deprecating than I had been in a long time. I knew I was in an extreme situation and everything I had tried hadn't worked. I also knew that Bright Line Eating addressed the addiction. It honestly felt like my last-ditch effort. If this wasn't going to work, nothing would.
So I signed up to try it for 14 days. I was desperate. I read through all the prep information in one day, went grocery shopping, and started Bright Line Eating the following morning. I reluctantly took half-hearted before pictures.
I kept my head down, followed the plan, and kept my lines Bright and shiny. At first, I did not lean into the community. I leaned into my faith. I prayed and surrendered to God. I begged him for strength. And I spoke my mantras over and over and over. "An alcoholic can't have one drink—you can't have one bite." "Hunger is not an emergency." "No one ever died of hunger between two meals." Over and over and over.
After some time going at my program alone, I started an Instagram page to document my journey—like a visual food journal. Surprisingly I met an amazing group of fellow BLE'ers and discovered the next best thing about my program—COMMUNITY! I joined the Bright Line Eating community and my program was taken to the next level. My buddies and mastermind group are integral to my daily success.
After 352 days of beautiful Bright Lines following the fabulous plan, I had released 90 pounds and I entered maintenance! This was 10 pounds less than I had ever imagined being or had ever been in my adult life.
Prior to Bright Line Eating my mind was a prisoner to food thoughts. While eating I would be planning my next "fix." I would eat in hiding. Feel incredible shame and torment for my food choices. Yet I also felt helpless to the next thing I put in my mouth. NOW—my food has beautiful boundaries. I know I'm eating amazingly nutritious and healthful foods in the correct quantities to sustain and fuel my body. I also fully enjoy my food!
I am forever grateful for my friends and family who have supported me and encouraged me daily to fight my addiction. I am forever grateful to Bright Line Eating for paving the way for my food sobriety and Bright Lines. I am forever grateful to the 230-pound Linnea who had the courage and grit to try one more time.
